We can all find reason to celebrate the start of a New Yearif we search within, says Nicola Humber
As we reach the end of a transformational year (to put it mildly), it’s a perfect time to reflect on everything you’ve experienced – and the fact you’ve made it through 2020. Go you!
Rather than focusing on all the things that maybe haven’t gone as planned this year and feeling dissatisfied with where you are in your life, I invite you to anchor into the deep magic of gratitude. Not in a ‘let’s gloss over the dark times’ kind of way, but as a means of allowing more of the true you to be expressed.
My go-to when it comes to this kind of reflective practice is journaling. Although I’m a writer, I used to resist journaling, as I imagined I’d have to spend hours pouring my heart out onto the page – and who has time for that? But the truth is, even a few minutes with your journal can make a huge difference and connect you with a new energy of appreciation.
Setting the scene
The power of journaling and any kind of gratitude practice is amplified when you make it into a ritual. This doesn’t have to be elaborate or complicated; just taking a moment to light a candle or some incense, pulling an oracle card and setting an intention before you come to the page will send a clear message to your subconscious that you are about to do something important.
How do I want to feel as I journal today? What would help me to feel that way?
Appreciate your wins
The pace of today’s world can keep us locked into a cycle of continual striving, jumping from one goal to the next and never taking the time to recognise how far we’ve come. One of the keys to contentment is to appreciate where you are right now and the successes you’ve already created in your life. So, take out your journal and give yourself at least 15 minutes to do the exercise inside our December issue!
