Astrologer Joanna Watters reveals why the retrograde in the planet of pleasure doesn’t necessarily mean bad news for your romantic life
While your star (also known as sun) sign is all about your essential nature, the real depth of horoscope only starts to emerge when we introduce the other planets to your birth chart. Your Venus sign tells you about your relating skills – she describes the kind of person to whom you’re sexually attracted and who are attracted to you in return, what you are looking for in a partner and how you approach relationships.
Venus’ journey through the 12 signs takes a year, but this doesn’t break down into a simple month for each sign, as with the sun. This is because, like Mercury, she has her times of retrograde motion, appearing to be looping backwards through the heavens rather than moving in a straight line.
We’re all used to Mercury turning retrograde as this happens so regularly (every four months, for three weeks at a time) and Venus has her own pattern too, albeit less frequently. She turns retrograde once every 18 to 20 months, stays retrograde for around 42 days and backtracks 15 to 17 degrees.
This year, Venus arrived in Gemini on the 3rd of April and she then turned
retrograde on the 13th May. She will turn direct again at five degrees of Gemini on the 25th June and enter the following sign of Cancer on the 7th August. In other words, Venus will be in Gemini for four months this year, four times longer than usual.
What to expect…
If Venus rules love, sex and everything to do with relationships, then it would make sense that switching to reverse means that these things unravel, right? Well, actually no. What it does mean is that all Venusian things will not be as straightforward as you would normally expect them to be. You might have a lot more questions than answers during this time, but you’ll learn a lot about yourself in the process. You may even have the chance to resolve love issues that started way back in the past.
