Every so often we need a change of scenery to refresh and revitalize in the name of wellness, so we sent Hannah Smithson to Moddershall Oaks Country Spa retreat to find a little zen in this peaceful five-star setting…
After a 20-minute taxi drive from Stoke-on-Trent station in Staffordshire, we arrived at Moddershall Oaks Country Spa retreat. Noticing the expansive fields surrounding the main spa building as we arrived, it was refreshing to be dropped off among 72 acres of stunning countryside next to a tranquil lake, nestled on the hillside.
On arrival, a friendly girl with an unmistakable Northern accent and welcoming smile greeted us and gave us a tour around the spa deli, next door to a newly built 25 square-metre heated spa pool area, kelo sauna and logfire. As we smiled in the luxurious five-star facilities we noticed the ‘snug’ room, which we later made full use of lounging on the sofas in near the cosy fireplaces.
Cold temps up north had surrounded the chalet-like architecture with snow as the steam rose off the water and couples clinked champagne glasses. The sixth-month-old outdoor vitality pool was the highlight of our spa stay, suffice to say, we couldn’t wait to dip in and warm our weary winter bones.
Shown to our room, one of 10 luxury hotel suites, we familiarised ourselves with our neat twin lodgings. Inside, Eastern-inspired decoration and arty lighting cast beautiful patterns on the walls, creating an ambient and soul-soothing atmosphere.
Outside our pad, the receptionist highlighted the hot tub that nestled amongst the bushes next door. Open till 10pm we decided to brace the chilly weather and dip in under the stars.
Experiencing the jacuzzi bubbles and heat steaming off the pool while there was snow on the ground outside – it was surreal and wonderfully warming.
Minutes later, the winter breeze had brushed our shoulders and we darted out again, wrapped snug in our bathrobes.
After a warm shower with organic spa Elemis products we were hungry for dinner. Presented with a tasty menu of delights in the bar, we took our time deciding on what the restaurant had to offer. Both my guest and I were sold with the the roast salmon fillet with scallop St Jacques and caramelised cauliflower purée, finished with samphire and dauphinoise potatoes – the flavours and textured worked perfectly! But the service was the stand-out aspect of our dining experience. Delighted with our extra bread and chips and with our water and wine glasses always topped up, our waiter had pre-empted our every need.
After the best night’s sleep I’d had in weeks, we woke the next morning and slathered the complimentary pro-collagen Elemis face cream on – resulting in super soft skin – a nice addition to the experience.
Our spa treatments were booked in for after breakfast and we both opted for the lava shell massage. I felt immediately calm as the therapist’s half-an-hour treatment, with essential oils, left me feeling detoxed and de-stressed – the aim of our winter break away.
