Witches celebrate eight festivals in a calendar year, otherwise known Sabbats. The Sabbats are the times of seasonal change. Yule is celebrated on December 21st – the shortest day of the year. It is that magical time of year when the days are darker and shorter, so we huddle together in warmth and brightness to celebrate the powerful energy of the light.
When it’s dark outside, it is wise to encourage the light to flourish within our souls. Yule is a time to light candles to warm ourselves and get cosy, close to comforting log fires in our homes and draw more light into our lives to counteract the shorter amounts of daylight. We bring gorgeous greenery into the home and decorate the altar with evergreen leaves to remind us of the fertile, verdant abundance which will naturally follow in the coming months.
Magical greenery such as ivy, holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the witch’s homes and altar to bring in the magic of the outdoors. These magical plants are also used in spells during Yule time.
Ivy is a strong and enduring plant. It is one of my favourite botanicals to work with. It represents our ability to survive even when times are challenging, because it grows in a spiral and clings tightly onto any surface where it can thrive during the harshest of winter weather. Deep green, sharp and shining holly is a magically protective plant, while mistletoe has a very strong connection to the spirit world and can be used in spells for new growth, relationships and love.
The Yule season is full of the magic of winter. It is a time of contemplation, to reminisce on the year gone past and clear away any energy accumulated from the previous year and replace it with enduring, bright, cleansing light energy.
Now try this!
Spell for angelic light
Here’s a spell to cast during Yule to bring more angelic cleansed light and growth into your life. Invoke Archangels Azreal and Metatron and write down on a piece of paper any old habits, negative behaviours or difficult experiences you went through during the year that still cause you pain and that you would like to get rid of.
• Burn the paper safely in a fireproof container such as a cast-iron cauldron or in your sink. Save a small amount of the ash to be used in your spell and wash the rest away.
• Use a dark green candle dressed with one essential oil. You can use lavender for healing, frankincense to connect with the angels and break old habits or myrrh to release old blockages.
• Place the candle in a candle holder and decorate the ivy in a spiral, clockwise around the base. Be sure to keep the ivy from touching the base of the candle, then sprinkle some of the paper ash on top of the ivy. As you light your spell candle, chant the following: “Light, light come to me, by the holy angelic powers that be, angels angels at my side, release negativity I no longer abide. Light, light pour onto my soul, fill me with love and make me whole.”
• When your candle has fully burned down, bury the remains of the spell outside far away from your home.
