Our columnist shares a spooky tale from inside a dream home
“A bundle of negative energy had somehow gained entry to Fiona’s house
Recently I conducted readings for a lady and her daughter who live local to me. On the day, the reading for the daughter went without a hitch but the second reading was a different matter altogether. I began to pick up on feelings of upset and nervousness from the lady, who I’ll call Fiona. These feelings were definitely not based in her family life, nor the lovely people in spirit who were coming through with messages for her. They began to manifest when I talked about a house move she’d made eight months ago.
A dream house
Fiona explained that she and her husband had fallen in love with their new home at first sight, even though it needed a bit of work. But from the moment they had moved in there had been all sorts of inexplicable things happening – doors slamming, knocks, bangs and other noises. She also complained of the property being extremely cold, in spite of central heating. “We just don’t know what to do, Derek,” Fiona said. So I offered to visit the house and do the clearance work that was so obviously needed. As soon as I entered the home I could sense the presence of two spirits, a woman and a man. There were no feelings of malevolence from either, in fact they both had a ‘homely’ feel to their presence. My spirit guide Sam told me that the lady in spirit had once lived in the cottage and that her name was Betty. The gentleman was named Tom. He had lived a little further along the row of cottages and worked as a farm hand. I knew, however, that these two spirits could not have been responsible for the feelings of coldness and unease.
A wall of cold
As I descended the stairs into the dining room I felt what I can only describe as a wall of freezing air. I knew it wasn’t a spirit person but rather a bundle of negative energy that had somehow gained entry into Fiona’s house. I called to Fiona and asked her whether anybody had used that room for a séance or a ouija board session. She could not tell me but a neighbour confirmed that Betty’s grandson had been allowed to live in the house. He had stayed there with a couple of friends, after Betty had passed, in order to save it from being vandalised. “They might as well have left it to chance,” grumbled the neighbour. “Those lads were a nuisance and used to get up to all sorts in there. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if they’d started dabbling in things that they didn’t understand!”
A cleansing ritual
Because the lads had been holding ouija sessions without an experienced medium present, a negative energy had managed to come through. I set up a candle rite and called upon my helpers and guides in spirit to rid the home of the bad energy. I smudged the house with sage and sweetgrass to cleanse the atmosphere. After about half an hour the atmosphere began to lighten and grow warmer. I explained to Fiona what had happened and that, in all likelihood, Betty would still come along to visit her old home. “Oh I don’t mind that at all,” said Fiona. She was quite happy that the old lady should pop in now and again. “At least now we know that we can live here happily without that awful feeling about the place.” I went on my way feeling satisfied that I had helped the couple continue renovating the home that they had fallen in love with.
