Hypnotherapist and meditation teacher Camilla Sacre-Dallerup shares her discovery of breathing exercises and the benefits she’s found.
I’m not quite sure why it’s taken me until the age of 38 to realise how important breathing can be, particularly when it comes to calming your mind and lowering stress levels.
However, I’ve always been curious about breathing exercises and meditation. And being a dancer definitely involves understanding how to master your breathing, so you deliver the best performances possible round after round.
That said, the past year (while I’ve been performing on stage in Calendar Girls, and learning to sing) has really shown me the powerful way our breathing can affect our minds, bodies and souls. As such, I’ve found myself naturally drawn to lots of jobs and exercises involving breathing work, such as meditation and yoga, of late. In fact, the first thing we focus on in our singing classes is the breathing.
I’m also learning about the amazing benefits certain breathing exercises can have on our daily lives. Simply focusing on it, and slowing it down, in a five-minute meditation each morning and evening sets me up for the day. There’s also something very spiritual (even serene) about doing this, and I’ll often find myself walking around with a general sense of inner calm for hours afterwards – even when faced with a tricky situation, like an argument!
What’s more, I’m now able to deal with stressful situations in better ways too. Rather than impulsively reacting to something (only to regret it later), I’m now able to draw on the calmness within, and respond in a more mindful, carefully thought through way.
Of course, no two people are the same, and it’s important to find the method that works for you best. And, with the Christmas season fast approaching, there really couldn’t be a better time to do so. Good luck!
