The art of scrying has been around for thousands of years and is a well-known method of fortune telling. We find out how it works
The stereotypical image of scrying has long since been of elderly fortune tellers leant over a crystal ball, providing guidance. While crystal balls are indeed the most common form of this ancient art, there is much more to scrying than meets the eye. Using a crystal ball and its internal images to provide guidance into events is known as crystallomancy, and can also apply to gazing into reflective surfaces, such as mirrors and water. Its many different forms were first recorded in Ancient Egypt, when priests and priestesses of the great temples, as well as ordinary people at home, scryed in the oil which filled lamps or large barrels.
HOW TO READ CRYSTAL BALLS
Cassandra Eason provides some tips on what to make of the images you might see in a crystal ball. Use the cracks and imperfections to make an outline and, as you become more experienced, you will be able to associate them with an event, relationship or situation connected with any question you ask
1 To begin scrying, picture the ball filled with rainbow colours.
2 Envision the colours within the ball merging into a soft white mist and then clearing.
3 Open your eyes and look into the centre of the crystal. You may get a sudden clear image. If not, turn the ball around in your hands while you study it.
4 Sometimes the images will be very detailed, three-dimensional and move within the ball. The first time an image moves is very exciting!
5 When you feel confident focus on one image you see clearly and add aloud what you feel about it – words that come into your mind and how it relates to your life. Does it answer any questions? Record the session if you wish or scribble down images and brief notes as you go.
6 If you really can’t see anything in the ball, it may be because your physical and analytical senses are much slower than your psychic senses. Stare intensely into the centre of the ball until your eyes want to shut.
7 Close your eyes slowly, then gradually open them. Blink and look into the ball again. Name aloud what you think, sense and see – this will invariably be accurate.
No special powers are needed to begin scrying but you’ll need to have good observation skills and the ability to interpret your inner language, which could take a little longer to develop. “Any crystal can be used for trance meditation,” says professional fortune teller, Alexandra Chauran.
“But my favourite crystal for scrying is a quartz sphere. These ones feature natural imperfections that can be used, and they are mostly clear and white so that any meaning seen in the refracted hues can be easily interpreted.” A ball should be picked in person from a rock shop in order to make sure the required imperfections are present.
“Ideally you should hold the ball in your hand so that you can rotate it and allow the shapes to take form as it moves in all directions,” explains Alexandra. “You can also use a base to allow you to rotate the crystal if it is large and you’re worried about dropping it.”
TYPES OF CRYSTAL BALLS
Psychic practitioner Cassandra Eason encourages anyone to attempt the ancient art and provides some advice on choosing your own crystal ball
1 The best balls for scrying should be clear, natural quartz not manufactured lead crystal or glass. These balls should allow the physical eye to lead the psychic or third eye we all possess, in order to interpret images clearly
2 You need not buy an expensive crystal sphere, but it should be, if possible, the size of an average orange so you have sufficient depth and variety within to stimulate clairvoyance
3 Look for one with inner markings that are not just a dense mass but allow the eye to weave in and out
