Sahara Rose talks to Soul & Spirit: “Your dreams are dreaming you back”

Host of the #1 spirituality podcast The Highest Self Podcast Sahara Rose helps us all find our soul purpose.
If you need a laugh, look up Sahara Rose on Instagram and watch any one of her ‘reels’, short videos poking fun at herself through spiritual comedy, dance and affirmations. Her #1 podcast has welcomed guests like Deepak Chopra and Don Miguel Ruiz and she’s broken out into the industry with her love of Ayurveda – you may remember she starred in our August 2019 issue. We catch up with the guru herself about how intuition is always at play, why the world is awakening now and what inspired her to share her infectious energy with the world.
How would you explain a ‘dharma’ to someone?
Your dharma is your soul’s purpose. It is the big reason why you are here and it is more than what you do, it is how you do it and why you do it. I call it your ‘secret magic sauce’ that you bring to the planet, it’s your unique frequency, the energy that only you can bring to the table. Your dharma may be to bring beauty to the world, to connect people back to their hearts, to merge ancient and modern spiritual practices, to create beautiful experiences for people or to help others connect to plans. It’s your overarching reason why. When we let go of the conditioning, let go of the limiting beliefs, let go of the societal upbringing, then we remember our dharmas. It’s not so much about finding your purpose as much as it is remembering it.
Is a global awakening coming?
I absolutely believe that global intuition awakening is next. I think it’s raising our consciousness. We are moving through a very pivotal time in human history, we are realising that we’re so much more than our minds and our bodies, and our monetary status and accomplishments and achievements and power and all of these different external factors that we have held onto all create our identity. Different practices like yoga and Ayurveda are here to bring about this shift in collective consciousness; we are essentially remembering the ancient ways once again. These practices have come back into our consciousness to help support in the awakening, which will naturally move into all the decisions that we make and will create ripple effects in all areas of society. Living our dharmas is the highest way that we can support that because we naturally have people who want to serve in all these different ways. I always say your dreams are dreaming you back. If everyone could actually step into their deepest desire, their dharmas, their higher selves, their soul’s expression, then the world could truly come into balance. In fact, it’s the only way the world can come into balance, when we live in line with our dharmas.
How would you describe the story of your life?
When I was a child I knew I was here to be of service and help others, but I wasn’t sure of the right way. So I looked around and saw that service meant sacrifice – it meant doing what was best for the greater good. I went into human rights and studied to become an international human rights lawyer. I realised how unfulfilled I was; I wanted to be on the ground communicating with them, connecting with everyone! In figuring out what I was meant to do, I went through my own health issues. When I was 21, I was diagnosed with perimenopause. Because of that, I went on a journey of self-healing, learning everything I could just how to heal myself, which eventually brought me to Ayurveda. At the time I was volunteering in India and I decided to sign up for Ayurveda school, which led to me having the desire to write a book. It’s in this process where the journey of discovering my dharma came through; something within my soul knew I had gone through these experiences to share it with others.
What happened then?
I got hired to write the Official Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda, which led to me walking up to Deepak Chopra at a conference. He ended up writing the foreword of my first book and of three of my other books, including Discover Your Dharma. I created a podcast to share more about my spiritual journey four years ago, The Higher Self podcast. Since then I have been on this journey of helping people embody their soul’s purposes, their dharmas. It doesn’t have to be sacrificial; your dharma shows you that your highest joy is in alignment with your highest form of service.
What are your sun, moon and rising signs?
For me, understanding Vedic Astrology Jyotish [an ancient astrology belief system] has been so major, truly unlocking my deep truth. In it, my sun and my moon signs are Sagittarius, which so embodies my energy of being all about joy, freedom, expansion, truth, spirituality, philosophy, adventure, travels and spontaneity. I really resonate with that Sagittarius energy. I was a backpacker and have always been on this journey to understand what is going on in deeper realms, what is the truth underneath everything, and to do it from a place of joy and expansion and creativity. My rising sign is Scorpio. The Vedic understanding of Scorpio is it’s all about transformation. People who have Scorpio as their rising sign are going to move through life creating transformation, and I’ve always lived that.
How can we recognise the signals our koshas send us?
I call koshas radio waves through our body. We’re always picking up on science, just like radios are picking up on different unseen frequencies. So, when we walk into a room and we feel like something’s energetically off, we’re feeling that through our koshas. I honour my koshas by beginning with my most basic kosha, which is my physical body, and honouring that, really making sure that I physically feel balanced first thing in the day. I exercise, stretch, dance, and really get into my physical body. From there I will move into a breathwork practice or meditation. The next kosha after the physical body is the mental body. For me, dancing really drops me into a higher state of consciousness, connecting me to my divine feminine.
What does being in a state of flow feel like to you?
The Universe wants us to be living in line with our dharma, so it responds when something is out of balance. Most of the time, we think, ‘oh, whatever’ and then it gets louder. The Universe responds again with a smack in the face, a collision, an accident, a breakdown, or something that you have no choice but to listen to. Often that is when people will create their shift, their spiritual awakening. This is called karma.
What does karma mean to you?
Karma is not here to get us, it’s here to remind us that something is off – that we’re not living in line with our Dharmas. Now, when we make that U-turn, we shift back into line with our Dharma, and as we follow the excitement we follow what feels good. We follow what’s moving through us, we look at the signs and we move with the direction of the Universe. Suddenly, it feels like the Universe is propelling you in the direction of your dharma in a way that you could have never done otherwise.
What does the future hold?
I believe that, right now, we are remembering the importance of each person to be focused and committed on their dharma. I created the nine dharma archetypes to break down the different ways that we are each meant to share our darkness with the planet. We need the teachers, we need the visionaries, we need the nurturers, the warriors, the researchers, the entertainers, the activists, the artists; we need everyone in alignment with their divine purpose. That is the only way we can come into balance. I think in 2020, we said ‘how can I actually commit to something and let it come from a place of joy?’ We have all come together and have been doing this work at this time to be of service to humanity in this collective shift of consciousness. A true way of living in community, support, love and fulfilment is possible for all of us. In fact, it is our birthright. And this can only come from us collectively living in our dharmas.
What’s your advice to any spiritual person feeling stuck?
Focus on grounding, and follow through with something. You don’t need to do everything right now; just take action on one thing. If you are feeling agitated, angry or impatient, focus on bringing your fire energy back into alignment. Cool, restore trust, surrender, be with the water. You don’t have to hold it all by yourself. And if you are feeling really heavy, sluggish, just low energy, balance your earth excess.
