Keep your trusted deck shielded from any negative energy with this beautiful velvet bag
Long used throughout history as a well-loved divination method, the practice of fortune telling with cards shows no signs of slowing down. If you’re someone who’s always got their cards on the go with them, there’s no better accessory than a stunning velvet pouch to keep them safe and sound.
With these being so quick and easy to make, why not gift your friends a bag for their own decks? A handmade personalised pouch will be very appreciated and go a long way in your coven!
• Velvet fabric • Cotton fabric • Embroidery floss • Embroidery hoop • Fusible interfacing • Ribbon
1 Measure the size of your pack of cards and cut two pieces of velvet measuring 6cm wider and 9cm taller. Place the pieces wrong sides together and sew around three sides, leaving 6cm un-stitched at the tops of both side seams.
2 Turn the pouch inside out and re-stitch the sides to create a French seam that encloses all of the raw edges. Fold in 5mm on all remaining raw edges and glue. Fold the top edges of the pouch in half and stitch down to make a drawstring channel. Thread this with the ribbon.
3 Place a piece of plain coloured cotton in an embroidery hoop and draw a 7cm circle in the centre. Sketch out a celestial design and embroider using two strands of floss. Cut a 7cm circle of fusible interfacing and iron onto the reverse of the motif.
4 Trim the fabric to 5mm from the edge of the design and fold behind. Pin the embroidered motif to the centre of the pouch and sew in place with blanket stitch.
This bag was made especially for Soul & Spirit by our in-house craft designer, Corinne Bradd, and the cards featured here are Doreen Virtue’s Crystal Angels Oracle Cards, available from Hay House (£13.49, hayhouse.co.uk).
