Use your imagination to receive a divine healing gift from the angels, says Chrissie Astell
There is a common misconception that meditation is sitting in the lotus position and completely emptying the mind. But a journey to the divine light through the power of imagination can be just as healing and rewarding.
Find your calm
We are told that meditation is key to spiritual development, but there are as many variations as there are teachers! I, like many others, find stilling the mind very difficult. So, when I found out 30 years ago that there wasn’t just one most important form of meditating I was thrilled. Simply staring into the petals of my favourite flowers, watching fishes in a pond or allowing my thoughts to wander across the cloud-streamed sky all count! In fact, for those who struggle with sitting still, I’ve finished many a workshop or retreat with walking meditation and am delighted to have lots of feedback saying just how enjoyable that was for them.
Whatever calms your thoughts and allows your body to come to a calm place is meditation, but my favourite method has always been visualisation. So, together, let’s use our imagination and journey to a special place, where the angels are.
1 Breathe to release
Start by settling into your own sacred space. Do this by lighting a candle, perhaps playing some calming instrumental music in the background, closing the door to the outside world and turning your phone to silent or off.
Now just breathe. Consciously become aware of your breathing. Feel the air as it enters your nostrils and follow it into the back of your mouth and down into your lungs, then again, follow it as it leaves your body. With every out-breath, relax your muscles. Permit yourself to let go of all tension held in your shoulders, neck and face, as well as your back, abdomen and arms and legs. Feel yourself be heavy in the chair and let it fully take your weight, with your feet firmly on the ground.
2 Journey through your soul garden
Allowing your closed eyes to roll around so that you can imagine looking through your brow, see a beautiful garden in your third eye. This is your soul garden. Imagine walking around this glorious space, smelling the fragrances, seeing the colours, hearing the birdsong, watching butterflies dancing in the breeze. All your favourite flowers appear to you, and you feel totally at peace.
In the far corner of this garden is a gate. Go through it and find yourself in a wide-open meadow filled with wildflowers and grasses. As you visualise walking through the meadow you can see something glistening in the distance, a stream leading to a river. At the side of the river, there’s a small boat with someone waiting to row you across the clear calm water to the other side. Can you see who this person is? Is this meaningful to you?
You step out of the boat onto a pathway that leads you to the side of a steep hill. Start walking and feel the air changing as you get higher and higher. As you climb the path you can see a bright light ahead. It is a huge golden gate with a bright light shining from behind it.
You find yourself walking faster with excitement towards the gate and as you approach, it swings open, revealing the brightest golden divine light.
3 Accept their gift
Standing before you is a beautiful being of light, an angel standing with arms open to greet you. Bask in the presence of this magnificent, loving angel and observe the reactions in your body. Take your time. Feel the love, feel the light and ask anything you need to know as you stand in this benevolent loving energy. Don’t rush, simply ‘be’ in this loving angelic light.
The angel has a gift for you. This may be a familiar fragrance, a spiritual symbol, a sense of colour, a physical sensation like a touch or tingle, sometimes a clear vision, a word or heartfelt sense of knowing… Take and trust whatever intuitively pops into your head, but do not analyse – simply accept with gratitude. The meaning of the gift will become clearer later.
When you are ready, thank the angel, and receive a unique blessing. Say farewell and turn back towards the gate. You may return whenever you wish.
4 Return healed
As you make your way back down to the river, notice the pathway. Has it changed at all? Your boat is waiting and as you step into it don’t forget to observe and thank the one rowing you back to your garden. As you walk across the meadow, carrying your gift from the angel, make sure to pay attention to the soft grass and firm earth beneath your feet. Open your garden gate and go inside among your flowers, birds and butterflies again.
Take a seat in the garden and breathe it all in. The fragrances, all the life-affirming sounds of Mother Nature you can imagine, are all in this peaceful garden. Breathe the sensations down into your physical body. Then, when you are ready, slowly and with intention, feel your feet on the ground, perhaps shuffling them a few times. Rub your hands together, and touch your face, and then when you are ready and fully back ‘to earth’, slowly open your eyes.
I often say a little prayerful affirmation of gratitude after my visualisations, something like:
“I am grateful to be surrounded by the loving presence of angels, and I give my thanks for the opportunity to strengthen my connection once again.”
Don’t worry if you are not a visual person and are not able to see what you think others might see. We all connect in our own unique way. Your intentions and your imaginings are enough. The angels are always there. We connect through prayer, music, joy and silence. Relax and enjoy, and don’t forget to write it down for future comparisons.
