Find spirituality here and now

Nikki Wyatt explains how spiritualism is far more than the zen and mystical
What does ‘spiritual’ mean to you? Do you only feel spiritual when you’re meditating, chanting, doing yoga or a tarot spread?
In the East, spirituality is more a way of life – it weaves in and out of everyday living with small ritualistic reminders that we’re spiritual beings having a human experience. In the West many of us have lost that sense of ourselves as divine in day-to-day life. Yet there are countless studies which show that people who have a belief in something wise, loving and creative beyond themselves are happier and healthier. Whether you call that God, the knowing field, Source, Creation, Goddess, the divine, nature or an intelligent Universe it’s good for your wellbeing on every level, so we’d do well to connect with it in our daily life as often as we can.
Be guided to a different dimension
How do you know when you’re connected to that part of you? Generally, your breathing slows and your mind calms – you’re in touch with your grounded central core that’s able to witness what’s going on, both outside and inside of you with a level of loving detachment.
See if you can identify how you get into that state most easily. Some of us reach deep relaxation floating in the sea, running, painting, meditating or walking in nature. Others find music leads them to that place, whether the music is overtly devotional or has particular rhythms that act on you like a snake charmer’s flute, taking you into another dimension.
Once you know what takes you there, build it into your day. It doesn’t need to be for long periods because, when you’re deeply relaxed and present, time itself appears to slow down. Ten or 20 minutes of being fully present is worth hours of experiencing the world through a mind occupied with regretting the past, judging and commenting on the present and anticipating the future.
Affirmation of the month:
‘I bring spiritual understanding to every aspect of my life, which becomes a fuller expression of my soul purpose’
Connect to your spirituality
One way to connect to your spirit daily is to keep a dream journal. Keep it by your bed and write in it as soon as you wake. Once you get up and move around the memories will fade. It’s generally the dreams or images you still remember clearly months or even years later that are significant. Notice your emotions too, it is just as important as the image – if not more so. Recurring dreams and repeating feelings or themes are almost certainly issues that you need to bring into your awareness to resolve.
As you prepare for the day take a moment to look at the sky – if you can watch the sunrise even better. We rarely look upwards with awareness. It’s important to acknowledge and connect to a sense of the bigger picture before all the small details of the day crowd in.
Awaken your senses
See if you notice animals or birds as you go through your day. These often arrive as symbolic messengers, so if one in particular seems to want your attention, allow yourself to open up to appreciate its beauty, skill and aliveness. Simply being aware of these other aspects of creation will keep you connected to something larger than yourself.
When you eat, try to stop whatever else you’re doing and focus on it as a moment of self-nurture. Bless the food and drink, even if you do it silently. Reflect on what needed to happen for that nourishment to reach you. How much sunshine, rain and earth was needed to grow it – energy that you’re now making part of your body. Appreciate the people who prepared it and imagine your body making the best use of it as you eat. All of this will make mealtimes a joyous and spiritual experience.
Spread love and light
Actively try to do one good turn each day, however small. It might be letting somebody into a line of traffic or ahead of you in the supermarket queue. It could be paying for someone’s coffee or appreciating someone’s choice of colours or contribution to a work project. Just as we can set off a negative spiral by complaining, we can also start a vortex of contagious positivity too.
Peacefully reflect
Take a moment before bed to look back up at the sky and acknowledge this vast cosmos and your place in it. Watching the sunset is a wonderful bonus. Before nodding off write down ten things you’re thankful for, including your body for being such an amazing vehicle for your spirit, and reflect how the divine showed up for you, whatever kind of day it was.
3 essences for everyday spirituality

• Wandering spiderwort essence works on our third eye, integrating understandings that are already in our consciousness so that we can use our intuition more in daily life. This essence draws the veil from our eyes, helping us make more empowered choices that are healthy for our growth. This essence can also release patterns of self-sabotage as we begin to understand our true value. Energetically, wandering spiderwort is a great booster if you’re finding it hard to motivate yourself to finish something.

• Papaya essence develops psychic skills, strengthening our connection with our inner guidance, especially in dreams, so that we can apply higher wisdom to our everyday life. It also brings a deeper understanding of spiritual and universal laws so that we can manifest with greater ease. As it gets to work, we’ll often feel more sensitive, softer and more relaxed. This essence also makes us aware of the masculine and feminine energies within us and helps them integrate and balance.

• Charoite essence supports soul level transformation. It helps you connect to ancient spirits and other dimensions without fear. It helps you stand in your power and express your needs, rather than pleasing others. It encourages intuitive action and helps you integrate spiritual values into daily life, so you’re better able to serve. Charoite gives you a clear view of your inner world and opens you to giving and receiving unconditional love. It brings acceptance of ‘what is’ so you can appreciate the joy and divine order in each moment.
