Do YOU have a secret squatter?

Let Emma Loveheart investigate for you! Our editor Rosalind Moody opens up her home and finds some unexpected guests
I should have suspected that the first property I moved into, alone, might have some energetic goings-on. It’s fascinating to think how many people and spirits have passed over the land I live on. I already sage smudge about once a month and place crystals around technology, meticulously charging them in the light of the full moon. But, when I found Emma Loveheart’s website, a remote spiritual and home healer who claims simply to ‘make homes happier’ by replacing poor energy in properties with positive instead, I felt my new home needed her help.
Since I moved in I had a strange feeling I couldn’t put my finger on. On some nights, I’d wake up and feel like I wasn’t alone, but hear nothing – no sound or disturbance that would explain my restlessness. I didn’t think there could be any way that there was an entity or energetic block attached to me personally, but I felt that something could be going on. I decided I would let Emma be the judge of what was really going on in the dark.
The property’s known history
No wonder the flat felt haunted with this much age-old activity. The property within which my flat is located sits across from an ancient pond which has a sweet water spring and was the site of Hull Mill, used as a corn
mill during the Middle Ages, then as a fulling mill in 1405. By 1690 it was an
oil mill for rapeseed and flax, until 1811, when it was transformed into a corn mill along with a gin distillery. Messrs Bawtree and Savill pumped £40,000 into the distillery (worth almost £3 million in today’s money), which quickly became one of the biggest in Britain; it is estimated that Colchester produced 50,000 gallons of alcohol every year. Back in the 1940s, the old mill was home to Old Heath Laundry, and sadly, it was here that four female workers became Colchester’s first civilian fatalities in the Second World War, when a German plane dropped a bomb.
