Daisy Foss shares her expertise on how to keep your gems and crystals in tip-top condition
Q: I use my crystals regularly for healing and sometimes they do not seem as powerful as I would have liked – should I be charging them? What am I doing wrong?
All crystals are said to be living elements – sometimes they need a rest and refreshment, whether they are sitting around as your personal collection or worn as jewellery. Most crystals are very effective when used as healing tools. Just like any other instrument, they perform better when they are cleared, cleaned, lovingly cared for and polished. I call this ‘the three C’s’, so that I remember to do it every time I use them for healing on a client or myself. When you put them away to rest, wrap them in coloured silk appropriate to the crystal. The next time you use them, you will be amazed at how much power they have stored within them. It doesn’t feel as if you are doing anything wrong, but maybe you could do a little more to improve the power of your crystals. There are so many different techniques; my favourite is the use of sound from a crystal or Tibetan bowl. I also spray them with healing essences and shower them in Angelic Reiki. Once or twice a month, you can really increase their healing properties by charging them with the energy flow of the moon. Wash them first in running water and then use the full moon light to release all the issues you’ve had over the last few days or so.
Q: I accidentally dropped my turquoise necklace in the bath and have noticed that since doing so, its colour hasn’t been the same. Will this affect its energies?
For your necklace to lose its colour after getting wet, it could be that you had bath salts and minerals in the water, as these would take a dyed colour out instantly. It is possible that this stone is actually not Turquoise but a dyed ‘White Howlite’, which is usually a very bright blue. It is often mistaken for the real semi-precious stone, and has the same appearance, nodular and density. As it is a white stone, it can be dyed easily. It can look the same, but is not nearly as expensive as the pure gemstone. The energy of Howlite is very different – it has healing properties for bones, teeth and soft tissue, as well as stress and rage. It feels like you may have picked up on this change after the accident. There are many different sources of Turquoise – it can be really pale or a deeper shade of blue green. If its very green, it has more iron in it and is quite rare.
Q: I’ve been gifted an Amethyst crystal and have tried to use it for my magic rituals, but so far have not felt a connection – what am I doing wrong?
The magnificent Amethyst crystal in all its forms is a sight to behold. It’s perfect for releasing negative thoughts, energies and entities, but not so good to use in magical rituals unless programmed to do so. As it was a gift, maybe it has been instructed to do something else. Traditionally, Amethyst Crystal is more for psychic development – it clears the higher chakras to enable a clearer channel. When you connect with the crystal through your third eye, this opens the pathway to your navel, your sacral chakra to enhance your psychic intuition, and activates your knowing. It is imperative when manifesting magic with crystals and other stones to choose the most suitable ones. Once it is established that you are the present guardian of the crystal, either by you being gifted it or exchanging it for money, then the fun begins! Note that Clear Quartz crystals are most often used in magical rituals, as they hold clarity and magnify energy very well.
Q: I dropped one of my crystals onto the floor and it now has a very small chip taken out of it. I am devastated and since it happened I cannot bond with my stone in the same way – what should I do?
If you drop a precious crystal and it chips, there is often a lesson to learn, even if it is just to be more careful and kinder to yourself. It can also be a message not to be so attached… to be free from over-reliance on your stones. There can and should be a balanced bond between you and your crystal – a mutual understanding with the consciousness of the stone. If this has disappeared and left you devastated, you now have the experience of the wounded healer. This can also be a catalyst for other losses you may be feeling. Immerse yourself and really feel the grief, bless the stone’s essence and thank it for all the wonderful experiences you have had together. When a crystal jumps out of your hands and breaks, its job is done, especially if the jewel smashes to the ground and shatters. This can be a sign that an old pattern, vow or karmic issue has completed and it’s the end of the journey for that crystal. The best thing to do with broken or shattered stones is to return them to the earth. Bury it somewhere precious to you or make a sacred space in your garden. If it is a little chip with the beauty of the crystal still shining through, you can use a little sandpaper to file away any very sharp edges.
Q: How can I keep my crystals looking brand new and shiny? Can I polish them with polish?
When your crystals are well loved, used often and treated as a sacred instrument, they will respond by shining their individual unique light, and will look like new all the time. All crystals grow, they are a living element, an organic being, and they are shaped and absorb all the energies in their environment. When crystals soak up daily energies, especially when you are using them as a healing tool, it is imperative that they are cleared of old energies. Do this using a prayer, mantra, herb essence spray, singing bowls, tuning forks or any other musical instruments, as they are very quick at releasing negativity. When your crystals are dusty and have absorbed oils from your hands, they need to be cleaned. This is very easily done, and for very dirty Quartz and harder crystals you can use a soft toothbrush and running water. For a really deep clean, put all your crystals in spring water and then bathe in the sunlight all day. Don’t do this with softer crystals – a quick dip in water and then patting them dry with a jeweller’s silver cloth will buff them to a shine.
