So, did astrology predict the pandemic? Only up to a point. Joanna Watters expands
You might remember that last year the astrological media was full of warnings about the looming Saturn – Pluto conjunction in Capricorn (exact on 12 January). The rarer the astrological event, the more significance it carries, and these two planets come together only once every 34 years. The last one was in Libra in November 1982, coinciding with the official end of a major recession in the UK, but the beginning of that recession’s legacy – mass unemployment that took years to sort out.
Astrology works on the “as above, so below” principle. In other words, events out in the world and in our personal lives match the symbolism of the planetary activity. If it’s heavy going up there, then it could be hard work down here. When you consider the nature of Saturn and Pluto individually, and the fact that they both rule the idea of endings, it’s little wonder that they can add up to bad news as a combination…
Events out in the world and in our personal lives match the symbolism of the planetary activity.
Saturn’s main principle is contraction,
the opposite to Jupiter’s expansion. If Jupiter is “yes”, Saturn is “no”. He is known as the Greater Malefic, the bringer of solemnity, restriction, obstacles, boundaries and endings. He rules authority, duty and responsibility. His nature is pessimistic, realistic and serious.
Pluto’s main principle is endings/beginnings,
often starting with loss, finality, birth of the new, transformative processes, absence, invisibility, starting from scratch, deep healing, resourcefulness and secrets. His nature is absolute, uncompromising and disempowering.
Could astrology have predicted an economic dip?
This time around, as the conjunction fell in Capricorn, sign of business, empire building and the economy, the speculation was around another recession and also ecological disasters in the making. But as it turned out 12th January was the day that Chinese authorities alerted the World Health Organisation to the number of virus cases in Wuhan.

No, astrology didn’t see this coming in the shape of a viral pandemic.
Nobody predicted devastation in terms of human life itself. But Pluto annihilated Saturn’s boundaries, it was an invisible enemy impossible to contain, and now virtually the whole world is in lockdown.
Jupiter enters Capricorn once every 12 years and has now caught up with Pluto. So now it’s all things Jupiterian that are being “cancelled out” by Pluto’s relentlessness…
What is Jupiter’s main principle?
Expansion. Jupiter rules anything that makes our life bigger and better. He is known as the Greater Benefic, the bringer of freedom, liberation, opportunity, luck, good fortune, abundance and generosity. Jupiter also rules long distance travel and all matters or people related to overseas.
One of the drums I’m always banging is that Pluto is not about “transformation” as all the textbooks would have us believe, or at least not in the magical sense. Yes Pluto is about total change, but it’s wipeout stuff first. I always teach my students to avoid interpretations that sugar the Pluto pill.
What is astrology telling us now?
From the Jupiter – Pluto sequence, it seems that the worst of this Plutonic pandemic will last until November. If we’re lucky, astrologically we’ll get a major and positive turning point when Jupiter turns direct in September.
What’s the bigger message?
The world out there is eerily quiet, but in our inner worlds is there a new noise, the first rumblings of real understanding? Can we carry forwards this new awareness of how modern life can be slowed down for the sake of controlling pollution and climate change? And can we honour our shifting priorities, and never take our Jupiterian liberties for granted again?

Rebirth is never easy, individual or collective. We’re all in this together and from my heart I wish you all the best possible journey. See you on the other side.
