Harness the abundant energy of this May Day festival, with head witch Rebecca-Anuwen
It’s the beginning of summer and you can see it everywhere, with nature blooming and blossoming around us. Along with nature, it’s time for us all to awaken with renewed hope and joy and celebrate the pagan festival of Beltane!
Harness the earth’s energy Beltane represents the peak of spring and the beginning of summer and is the final waxing phase of the sun’s cycle. It is marked on 1st May, or the full moon closest to that date. During this time, the earth’s energy is at its strongest as the world around us is bursting with new life. It’s a time for experiencing the full power of your potential. Abundance, fertility and union are the key themes of Beltane. During Beltane, flowers are everywhere and the trees are full of blossom, the air is
filled with birds singing and the animals are having their young. There is sunshine and rain, sap rising and fresh growth.
Beltane celebrates the union of opposites. This festival is where the tradition of dancing round the maypole comes from – the weaving together of the female and male energies. This is the perfect time in the year to bring your own hopes and dreams into action, with the energy of joy and fun.
5 ELEMENTAL WAYS TO CELEBRATE BELTANE
1 Relight your fire
Make a bonfire or light a candle. Fires were lit during traditional Beltane celebrations and remain a key component.
2 Commit to the spiritual
Beltane is a time of sacred union. What can you commit to? A person, a new practice, a new habit, a new way of showing up? Use this time to commit, or recommit, to those things that are important to you.
3 Bloom with flower power
Bring flowers into your home, make a flower crown, create a daisy chain, plant some flowers or give some flowers to a friend! Wear green and bring green into your home. Allow the vitality of the colour green to refresh and nurture you.
4 Refresh your altar
Add some red to your altar to tap into the energy of passion, and add some green to represent fresh starts.
5 Honour the hawthorn tree
Hawthorn is the tree of Beltane. Dance with it, sing with it, hang ribbons from it. The ribbons represent wishes, but make sure you use something that will not damage the tree or environment – think fast-biodegrading ribbons.
NOW TRY SOMETHING NEW
Create and grow an intention box
Now is the perfect time to create an intention box that is filled with your
intentions, wishes, dreams, hopes and desires. You could even make a family one, with everyone contributing their hopes and dreams for the family.
• A small cardboard box
• Paper and pen
• Seeds – try sunflower seeds!
• A piece of hawthorn, branch or flowers – please don’t cut the tree, look for a fallen piece of wood or pick the flowers respectfully
• Something that represents your wish – these could be herbs, flowers, crystals, items of yours, words, images
• Some earth or compost
1 Decorate your box in a way that feels good to you – it can be as elaborate or as simple as you like. You may add some words, symbols or runes, ribbon or images.
2 Poke a few small holes in the lid of the box and place some earth in the bottom of your box.
3 On your piece of paper write down all of your intentions, hopes and dreams. As you write them down, visualise them coming into your life with grace and ease. Add your paper, hawthorn and objects to the box.
4 Cover with another layer of earth. Scatter your seeds on top. Cover with a final layer of earth.
5 Finally, plant your box. Dig a hole that is slightly deeper than your intention box, and as you visualise your dreams and wishes coming to fruition, gently place your box into the ground, knowing that as your seeds begin to grow, so will your intentions.
WHY NOT TRY FIRE?
Use the fires of Beltane to cleanse and clear. Ask yourself:
• What fire is burning deep inside you?
• Is this a fire of creation, or a destructive fire that is clearing the way?
• How can you honour the fire that burns within you?
