Meditation is a life strategy that has profound benefits for your mind. So, what would happen if we could jump into the body of a regular meditator? What would you feel that was different than to how you feel now? Would it be worth it? How does it help your emotional intelligence? Simonne Lee reveals what happens when you meditate regularly…
You establish a deeper connection with yourself, your body, your emotions and your mind
Your awareness of yourself begins to heighten. This means you are attentive to your emotions, thoughts and sensations in the body as they start instead of them leading you, becoming more aware of your inner self.
Your breath automatically deepens and paces itself
So this may not be a BIG thing in your mind however, being able to slow down your breath and deepen it is the exact opposite of being in ‘flight or fight’ mode. A strong deep breath steps away from stress and anxiety lowering the release of cortisol and adrenaline within the body.
Wonderful sleeping patterns begin to occur
Are you a morning person? Regular meditation resets our internal clocks allowing for deeper and consistent sleep patterns. So just in case you’re still not sure what that means – you tend to wake up earlier, naturally!
You become grounded and centred
Meditation creates awareness around our energy. Daily meditation welcomes all our energy back home into the body. Having a feeling of being more solid and stronger in the body. This allows us to know what is our energy and what isn’t so we can let it go and enjoy our inner peace.
You start to trust yourself
Becoming more responsive of your energy and emotions means that you’re not relying on external confirmation. Trusting your judgement and intuition becomes easier and easier.
Decisions become easier to make
Simply by ‘dropping in’ and connecting with you removes daily clutter i.e. build up of negative thought and emotional patterns. It’s like wearing freshly washed clothes EVERY SINGLE DAY. With a clear mind and emotional body, quick and clear decision-making becomes part of the daily norm.
Pack more in a day by doing less
By having your internal clock reset, you’re sleeping better, waking up refreshed (perhaps even earlier). You trust yourself more and are able to make quicker and better decisions. Who wouldn’t pack more into a day without less stress!
You connect effortlessly with people
Meditation is like buffing and polishing our energy. Whether people can see this or not, they definitely respond to it and enjoy the connection when presented to them. When you are in regular connection with yourself, it’s easy to connect with others. Therefore you’re able to recognise one’s own emotions and other people’s emotions independent of each other, thinking and behaving sensitively to others and yourself i.e. emotional intelligence.
You can accept the now
As stress increases the opposite happens to our tolerance levels. Taking comments or actions in the wrong manner leave a residue of unsettlement on us. When we meditate, we actually step into the moment of life – the present. This allows us to take in different perspectives at the one time reducing any possibilities of misunderstandings.
You feel real joy
Ever seen a yogi mad? Me either! Regular meditations can teach us emotional maturity, knowing when to respond and when to step back. There is a deep joy and satisfaction in knowing your can manage your emotions instead of them managing you.
In case you’re wondering what regular meditation is…
A simple daily ‘drop-in’ on yourself with your breath in and out for 1-5 minutes daily is perfect to start you on your way to inner peace!
