Psychic extraordinaire Tarotbella takes us on a tour of all things ethereal, and it isn’t as scary as you’d expect…
Have you ever seen a ghost? If you haven’t seen one yourself, perhaps you know someone who has. Even though scientists say there’s no proof they exist, the national tourist board states there are over 10,000 haunted locations in the UK. And far from the floating white sheet often portrayed in cartoons, paranormal experts have identified as many as eight different types of ghosts. So, what are these strange manifestations? And how can we spot one for ourselves?
What types of ghosts are there?
Elementals Ghosts that barely move; instead they glare at passers-by from a certain location, often a burial ground, merely dim reflections from the distant past.
Poltergeists Unlike most ghosts, poltergeists have the ability to move objects in the physical world and their activity usually occurs only in the presence of a particular living person.
Historical ghosts The earthbound spirits of the dead. They linger in places which were important to them and usually interact with the living.
Mental imprint manifestations ‘Energies’ left over from a particular event, often a tragedy. They tend to appear on a particular date or at a particular time of night, repeating the same action over and over. It’s believed they do not have a ‘consciousness’.
Death survival ghosts Spirits, usually of friends or loved ones, that appear to people who are dying or find themselves in life threatening situations.
Time slips A rare occurrence when a living person suddenly finds themselves surrounded by ghostly spirits, objects or landscapes from a bygone era.
Ghosts of the living The ethereal doubles of living people. These eerie reflections are seen in places where the living person is not, and may never have been.
Haunted inanimate objects Non-living objects that are able to move or otherwise act on their own—a chair that rocks by itself, a radio that keeps turning itself on, or a keepsake that seems to bring ongoing misfortune.
6 signs of spirit presence
The following everyday phenomena may indicate there are spirits around you:
1 Your possessions keep going missing. Often the little everyday items which, although not expensive, are used daily and their absence is therefore noted.
2 Your pets are tense. Does your furry BFF suddenly stop, shudder or arch, and then howl or hiss at something unseen?
3 The temperature drops. This is often really noticeable in certain rooms. You feel a chill the minute you step through the door.
4 Your appliances play up for no reason. Lights go on and off, TVs flicker, bulbs pop, radios increase in volume and so on. Ghosts seem to say ‘hi’ via electromagnetic frequencies.
5 The phone keeps ringing once. You go to answer and then it stops. Someone is trying to get your attention perhaps.
6 You see blue flames. If a candle flame burns blue or suddenly goes out with no apparent breeze, it’s a strong hint that ghosts are present.
3 steps to summon a ghostly get-together
1 Set the scene. Evening is often a better time to make contact and consistency also helps, so if you’re going to settle down every Wednesday at 8pm to make contact, then they’ll get used to that. Low lighting, peace and quiet, safely burning incense or having fresh flowers in the room can all induce the right atmosphere and consistency.
2 Create your own shield of protection. Sit quietly (feet on the floor, legs uncrossed, back straight) and relax, taking deep even breaths. As you inhale, imagine positive protective energy from the earth flowing up through your feet into your body as a white or golden light. As you exhale, imagine all the negativity and stress you harbour leaving your body as grey plumes of smoke. Keep breathing deeply until your body is filled with white or golden light, then visualise it expanding beyond you, surrounding you like an ‘egg’ or shell. This is your shield of protection.
3 Before communicating, make sure that you’ve fully defined your boundaries of who you will communicate with (for example, the spirit in your house). Say this intention aloud. Spirits can hear you when you speak internally or externally. If you want them to talk to you, ask them questions. You can ask them identifying questions, queries about their life, message or purpose. They will reply through your intuitive senses (it could be via their preferred method or it could be your strongest sense, for example sound, vision, sensation and so on). A fun exercise is to write a letter to your spirit and leave it under your pillow, or in the house where you think they reside. Ask for some kind of response and then keep an eye, ear or nose(!) out for what happens.
Let go of ‘bad’ ghosts
4 steps to a ghost-free space
In the (very unlikely) event that you feel uncomfortable with spirits in your home, there are steps you can take.
1 Open the doors and windows so that the energy has a place to escape.
2 Light a sage stick and gently blow on it until a there are billows of smoke swirling from it. Walk clockwise around your home, making sure to let the smoke reach all corners. You can enhance the effect by stating clearly in each room that you are asking the spirits to leave this place immediately.
3 Sprinkle salt into four corners of each room and allow it to sit for 48 hours. Then sweep or vacuum up the salt and throw it away in the bin.
4 Light white candles after your cleansing rituals to remove the last vestiges of negative energy. Settle down and do something relaxing and calming, such as reading or meditating, with the candles burning.
