Our kitchen witch Silja shows you how to tap into the magical properties of your favourite herbs
The oldest known visual evidence of roses is preserved in a fresco from the palace of Knossos on Crete in around 1600 BC, where roses were depicted with departed loved ones. The history of roses in magic and mythology goes back to ancient Egypt, where they were sacred to Isis, the goddess of love and rekindled relationships, and whose mythology features several instances of mortals transforming by eating roses, to symbolise people becoming the best they could be. In Greece, roses feature prominently in the mythology of Cupid and Psyche, the latter who created the first roses after being deflowered by Cupid.
St Valentine’s Day and the week before this date are known to be the biggest selling times for roses. Hold out until the days after though, and you can often buy them at a cheaper price. You can even then dry the rose petals for later magic use. If you are given roses by someone you love, a simple way to increase the magic between the two of you is to place a photo of both of you at a happy time in-between the stems, or rub the back of the photo with the rose petals.
Both rose petals and the flower’s scent as an essential oil or perfume are symbolic with traditional love potion ingredients, making this bloom perfect for the month of February’s magical herb. When you use rose petals, make sure to use a color that corresponds to the intent of your magic. Opt for yellow for a loving friendship, pink for romantic affection and red for sexual desire. If you do not like the scent of roses or are allergic, you might try rosehip tea to draw love to you. In fact – it is said in old folk magic that to protect a loved one both from harm and love rivals, you should place a rosehip under their pillow.
Now try this…
Useful spells for roses
1 To find love, anoint a simple white candle with rose by either rubbing rose oil into it, or rubbing it with petals as you chant, “I seek the perfect love, and ask for guidance from above… let me see the lover that is perfect for me!”
2 To keep love in your home, either if you have been fighting recently, or things have become stagnant, mix some rose petals (for love) with sugar (for the sweetness of a good relationship), nutmeg (for luck and keeping expectations realistic) and black pepper (to remove negativity). Sprinkle some of this mixture on the inside of doors and along windowsills.
3 Before going on a date, take a bath with rose-scented bath bubbles, or add a few drops of rose oil to your bath. You can do a short meditation to make you more self-confident and able to open yourself to love by visualising love gods and goddesses such as Eros, Aphrodite, Cupid, Isis and Venus in a circle around you, giving you strength. Then, visualise yourself with your love being together, smiling and happy.
Did you know?
You can often buy homemade pot-pouri which contains rose buds or petals. Place in your home by the bed to attract love and heighten passions, or at work to find a potential partner
