Thought feng shui was only for your home or office? Think again! Its principles can apply to all aspects of life, including your handbag, says Aroon Ajmera
Handbags tend to function as an extension of your personality, reflecting the things you lack or crave. If it’s more security you’re after, you’ll no doubt hoard things in your bag and be prepared for all eventualities – umbrella, toiletries, medicines, hand sanitiser etc; if yearning for beauty, you’ll have a stash of make up and perfume, or if slightly lacking in self-confidence, you may never leave the house without books, music and magazines, in case you find yourself alone and waiting for someone. So, to improve the overall energy in and around your tote, saddle, clutch or uffle, follow these handy hints.
1 Choose the right colour
Each hue has corresponds with one of the five elements. Choosing the correct one is thought to improve your energy levels. So, select a colour that will support you – such as beige if you are feeling ungrounded and want to come down to earth.
• Red shades denote fire, activity, passion.
• Green is linked to the wood element and growth,
• Yellow, beige, and cream represent earth and stability.
• Black and blue are linked to water, emotions and fluidity.
• White, gold or silver signify metal, strength and decisiveness
2 Go for the best size and shape
A work of art ought to be decorative, whereas a dishwasher needs to be functional; a handbag should be both.
Make sure it fits your body just right. Carrying one that’s too big is a burden and can drain your energy levels, whereas a tiny one that won’t accommodate all your necessities adds stress and is not functional, which is also energy depleting. Go for a model that’s shallow rather than deep, so everything is easy to see and reach; this also prevents you lugging around unnecessary items just because you have the space.
3 Organise the insides
Make sure there is a proper compartment for each of your three basic items: purse, mobile phone and keys. Get rid of the clutter; do you really need so many lipsticks and hand creams? Downsize on the contents where possible. Also pout any rarely used or old keys in a bowl or drawer at home; do you really need to carry round the one for your garage? Make sure you know what each one is for, too. Practical items such as a pen, mirror, glasses and sanitary items are OK as they have a purpose and are therefore not clutter. But get rid of old receipts, train tickets, used tissues, chocolate wrappers, and
4 Purge your purse
Ensure your purse only contains business cards, cash, credit cards, your travel pass, family photos, and perhaps a picture of your favourite deity, such as Ganesh or Sai Baba (for inner security).
5 Attract abundance
In the change section of your purse, keep three Chinese coins tied with red ribbon, as this is said to enhance abundance and attract prosperity, based on feng shui beliefs.
6 Protect yourself
Ease any communication stress by keeping your phone battery charged to get you through the day. Stick a little crystalium disc to the phone to protect you from the electromagnetic field emissions.
7 Stay calm with crystals
Crystals are wonderful companions for clarity of thinking; keep a small, white, clear quartz in your bag to help remain focussed during the day. Alternatively, use rhodochrocite for enhanced intuition.
