Clive Carter thinks it’s high time your gave your precious stones a clean
Just as much as we love choosing our crystals (correction: letting them choose us), we also want to make sure they keep active, keep energised and keep protecting us day after day. Charge their batteries with these top tips from our Crystal Q&A expert Clive Carter and you’ll feel their power heal you again in no time at all.
1. Decide wisely
Your intuition or sixth sense should tell you in some way, if you feel that a particular crystal is not working for you as it has in the past, then perhaps its time for it to be cleansed. Or, sometimes, if several other friends or family have handled your crystals it may be a good idea to cleanse them before you use them again. Sometimes, when you look at your crystal collection you may feel some don’t look as vibrant as they first did; this is time to not just cleanse but to recharge their energy. I find the moonlight of a full moon will both remove any negativity stored within my crystals, and also reenergise them – but don’t forget you need to instil into your crystals the intent in which you wish to use them.
2 Cleanse considerately
I don’t believe that there are any stones that will not benefit from at least an occasional cleansing. I know that many crystal writers talk of stones that never need cleansing, such as Carnelian, Citrine, Kyanite and Selenite, as these are all believed to dispel negative energy and transform it into the positive. However, it can do them no harm to let them soak up the moonlight of a full moon – you might just find they will work even better for it.
3. Choose your method
There are many ways to cleanse your crystals. The first and easiest way is to rinse your crystal in water. I prefer nice cool spring water but, failing that, tap water will work to rinse away any stored negativity from the crystal. You could also try an herbal cleansing solution such as the petal tone essence Crystal Clear by David Eastoe. This is made using water from the Chalice Well in Glastonbury mixed with petals from very special plants. A few drops of Crystal Clear in a little spring water sprayed lightly onto your crystals can quickly remove any negative vibes from them. Another very good method of cleansing is smudging – you can smudge your crystal by wafting the smoke from a burning white sage leaf or a bundle of sage over or around them. Cleansing using light works well too; use good bright sunlight but don’t forget some crystals will fade. My preferred method is moonlight. I leave my favourite crystals on my windowsill (inside behind the curtain) on any night with good moonlight, and the full moon will recharge as well as cleanse them.
4. Notice any changes
If your crystal feels different after you have cleansed it, that a positive sign that the cleansing has worked in removing negative energy from it. Many people say their crystals have a brighter look and a more positive feel after cleansing the, which is great and means that they are ready to work for you when you next need them to.
5. Be careful with water
Some stones will disintegrate if left in water, such as those that were formed as sedimentary deposits over many years and stones such as Malachite or Azurite, which can be ruined if left wet for a while. The best thing to do if your crystals inadvertently get wet is to pat them dry with tissue or a soft cloth and leave them in some sunlight to finish off drying them fully. If you find that your crystal is really beyond saving, then bury it back into Mother Earth, as its work for you is probably done. There is usually a spiritual reason behind why these things happen in life.
6. Create a crystal cleaning kit
Keep the following to hand:
A soft cloth to wipe your crystals with after cleansing in water
A bundle of White Sage – you can always cleanse by smudging if you have some sage!
A black velvet bag or pouch – pop your crystals in with a piece of carnelian to cleanse them
A soft bristle shaving brush – great for brushing away the dust on crystal clusters
A bottle of Crystal Clear or any other herbal cleansing formula
A white Candle for when you give your crystals your intent
