Be more positive today with these four simple steps to supercharge your happy side…
It may sound obvious, but a big cuddle is one of the simplest ways to boost our happiness. When you give someone a hug, the feeling and the contact between you causes a release of oxytocin in your body. Studies show that the more hugs we give or receive, the more of the hormone we produce, so make it your aim to give and receive as many as possible!
Lend a listening ear
When you talk to someone and give them your full attention, the connection made between the two of you stimulates the release of oxytocin. Any kind of warm emotional contact, then, instantly raises your happiness levels!
Pay attention to kindness around you
We witness acts of kindness and moral beauty every day, but we don’t always really appreciate them and actually take on board what is happening. But when we do, whether it is an act of kindness such as giving a homeless person some spare change or donating to charity, or even just watching an inspiring video through social media, the uplifting feelings produce oxytocin, giving our blues a blitz.
Be kind to animals
Happy chemical reactions are also produced when we play or interact with animals – even if it’s just for a short time. When we play with dogs, for example, or stroke a cat, rabbit, or horse – it’s the feelings associated with the human and animal bond and their happy reaction towards us that produces the oxytocin in our own bodies. You can also get this feeling from rescuing a creature in trouble (such as safely removing a spider from the house, or helping a mistreated animal).
