This new year, Derek praises the power of positive thinking
A new year always brings new enthusiasm and a wish to bring changes, hence our love of New Year’s resolutions. We promise ourselves that we’ll give up this, or stop doing that, but within days many of us fall back into our old ways.
One thing I think we’d all benefit from next year is if everybody started to make it their mission to think positively. Positive thinking, healing and prayer can have such a marvellous effect on us all, especially if we think collectively. Every day of my life I set aside a certain amount of time – it may only be five minutes – at seven o’clock each evening to send out healing thoughts and prayers to all.
Occasionally I will ask people to join me in sending out these positive thoughts and healing when I am approached by a person who is really at their wit’s end with a problem.
One such case was a little girl who I will call Emma. She wasn’t even two and her family were devastated when she was diagnosed with leukaemia. A family member got in touch with me and asked that I send healing to Emma as the prognosis for her survival was very slim indeed. I immediately started sending out fervent healing prayers that a positive outcome would be achieved. I asked everyone I knew to join me at a certain time of the day in sending positive energy to Emma. Slowly but surely Emma fought the disease. There were one or two setbacks along the way but eventually Emma was well enough to return home to her family. She is now a happy little girl living a full and normal life and remains in good health regardless of her rocky early years.
I am convinced that the collective healing thoughts and prayers from so many people helped save her. This is not in any way undermining the marvellous paediatric medical team who cared for her when she was so ill, nor am I in any way suggesting that modern medicine did not bring Emma through her awful illness. But combined with all the medical help, positive thoughts and spiritual healing can, and does, help everyone. It certainly is not a cure-all and should never be perceived as such, but a positive attitude goes a long long way to achieving an outcome that can at times seem hopeless.
I am a great believer in keeping the faith. It has helped me in many areas of my own life over the years. When things have seemed hopeless and situations irretrievable, I have managed to find a grain of positivity and clung on to it. So with that, I wish each and every one of you a happy and positive new year.
