Let’s hear it for one of nature’s true treasures: amber
Words: Clive Carter
Why is orange the go-to colour at Halloween, or as white witches call it, Samhain? Three shades of the colour, cherry, champagne and butter, have one thing in common: they’re all types of amber, with even up to 2% of the stone green and even rarer colours in blue and black. Up to 320 million years old, it can form in several ways, where a tree has fallen and the sap leaked into the ground and got trapped in cavities, where it has been able to dry and harden and become ‘copal’, known as young amber. This will age into amber in, oh, only about 10 million years, attracting such wildlife as seeds, fungus gnats and other insects into its sticky resin – even a scorpion!
Formed anywhere that there were ancient woodlands, it is amber from the Baltic region of Europe that seems to be the most prized for jewellery making. But spiritually speaking, when used as a healing stone, amber is great for soothing pain and relieving stress. It is commonly used as small bracelets or necklaces for very young children, known in the Baltics as teething necklaces due to its calming and soothing effect for infants. In fact, it works to calm and soothe us at any age, reblancing a busy or muddled mind
Freedom of expression
Amber is a fantastic stone to have at Halloween, not just because of these spooky trapped insects millions of years old, but it is also believed to stimulate the intellect of anyone who wears it. It also brings about a fantastic ability to express yourself in different ways and help to build your self-confidence to let you get out there and enjoy life. In some Asian cultures amber is known as the “soul of the tiger” and highly regarded as the stone to instil courage and good luck! Something witchy In some ancient cultures, amber was even worn to protect you from witchcraft, sorcery or poison. In some American folklore it is believed that only a high priestess could wear amber after gaining her third degree in witchcraft. Other properties are said to bring about wisdom, thus enabling you to be more confident in your decision -making. So now you can be sure on exactly which stone to pick up next time you’re in your local rock shop…
