This month, Patricia Weston shows you how to create some elemental magic with the power of earth, air, fire and water
To be whole is to balance your energies in harmony with the elements around us. Every living organism on the planet is made up of the five elements – earth, air, water, fire and spirit. The pentacle is the symbol of the witch, and its points represent the five elements encased in a circle to reflect our oneness, unity and connection to the whole.
The elements are the essence of life itself, and each one relates to a different aspect of life. Earth relates to the material world and the actual earth we stand upon and to practical things. Air relates to the intellect and the mind and ideas. Water relates to actual water, dreams, the intuition and emotions and feelings, fire relates to courage, power, enthusiasm and our spark. Spirit is our connection to the divine or source energy. As a witch, I love to delve as deep as I can and discover more about myself and my world.
In exploring the elements, we can learn so much about who we really are. Even when you explore your zodiac sign, you discover which element you are mostly ruled by, and this in a small way helps you define and understand yourself on a deeper level. It can also be a lot of fun figuring out who you are and what makes you tick! When we set up a witch’s altar, we place something on each corner to represent the elements. For fire in the south, you can use a candle or your wand; for water in the west, direction a chalice filled with moon water; for earth in the north, direction some stones, earth or salt, and for air in the east, direction your athame or smouldering incense. I like to place a lighted candle in the middle to represent the spirit energies and divine light.
To commune and connect with yourself and your world and work your magic as a witch, it is very important to become familiar with the magical elements. Balancing the elements gives power to spell casting and is an essential part of the magical process of spell weaving. It is only when we can balance our elemental energies that we as witches can truly harness our power.
Connect to each element
• Earth: Walk on the grass, sand or mud in your bare feet and really feel the powerful solid nature of the ground beneath your feet. Alternatively, you can get your hands stuck into the earth by gardening or running fingers through millions and millions of grains of sand.
• Air: Feel the breeze moving through your body on a windy day – feel cleansed and purified by it. Let it swirl around you and enjoy the airy feeling.
• Water: Spend time near flowing water, like the sea, or a river. Immerse your body into the water and feel it move around your body. Or, you can just bask in the water in a bath or shower. As you bathe, meditate on what dreams or emotions emerge from the depths.
• Fire: Light a fire and gaze at the flames to discern images and pictures from the dancing orange light. If you don’t have a fire to gaze at and meditate or divinate with, light a candle and watch the flame to see what images come to mind. Fire also transmutes, which means it can turn negative energy into ashes.
