Here’s our beginner’s guide to becoming a kitchen witch!
Growing your own produce not only guarantees your food is organic, but it also means you can access a whole host of magical ingredients on demand. What’s more, you don’t need a garden to do this – there are plenty of herbs and spices bursting with magical properties you can grow straight from your kitchen windowsill. Here, spiritual expert Silja explores some of the best seeds to plant, plus how to harness their supernatural properties while you’re at it.
SEED GROWING MASTERCLASS
Whether you’re looking to improve your love life, find financial security or open your third eye, here’s how to grow the most magically-potent herbs…
• Seeds or cuttings (we recommend basil, chilli and rosemary)
• Plant pots (the more colourful, the better)
• Soil or compost
STEP 1 Before planting your seeds, hold them in your hands and visualise them growing into strong, healthy plants
STEP 2 Fill your pots with soil or compost and spread the seeds on the surface, before covering with a thin layer of soil and gently watering
STEP 3 Close your eyes and imagine any dreams you have coming true. Gently touch the soil and send the earth and seeds your love and energy
STEP 4 Tend to your plants and water them when needed. You should also take this opportunity to make practical steps in your life to help realise your dreams
STEP 5 Enjoy watching your vegetation grow and your dreams manifest
GROW BY THE MOON!
Also known as biodynamic gardening, planting and harvesting by the lunar calendar is said to spawn healthier, bigger plants – and more potent magic! Here are Wiccan Priestess Silja’s top tips:
New moon: Not the best time for planting or harvesting. Use this period to prune your plants or plan what you would like to grow next.
Waxing moon: An auspicious time to plant – as the moon grows in the sky, so will your herbs.
Full moon: An ideal time to pick herbs and spices – magically speaking it’s a time of completion and resolution.
Waning moon: Perfect for preparing your soil or drying your herbs for long-term storage.
Paint your pots with a bright colour or adorn them with Reiki symbols to attract more lunar energy. Planting seeds in egg cups is also said to be lucky
CHILLI FOR PASSION
If you’re looking to spice up your love life, this is the perfect ingredient for you. Chilli can also enhance your creativity and help you summon additional support from your spirit guides. Quick-fix spell To add some heat to the bedroom, rub some chilli oil into a red candle, then light it. Easy ritual for intimacy…
• 1 sheet of red paper
• Chopped chilli
• Red peppercorns
On the paper, outline a male shape in glue, then sprinkle it with the chilli. Next, draw a female body on top of the male and cover it with parsley. Finally, stick the peppercorns to the shapes and put this artwork in your bedroom to enhance the bond between you and your partner.
BASIL FOR PROSPERITY
This is the perfect herb to turn to if you’re looking to attract more money in your life. Basil can also enhance divination skills and is said to promote inner strength.
• Fry some basil in batter before asking for a pay rise – its gold and green colour could draw money to you
• Place basil close to your front door or your computer to help bring you good luck An easy ritual for security…
A large piece of basil and a cash note
Kiss the basil, then place it on the note. Fold the money four times while saying, “I ask for enough to live comfortably. I am a good person, I deserve this money. I do not ask for much, just enough to get by!” Keep the money, with the basil inside, in your wallet.
ROSEMARY FOR PROTECTION
This woody herb is the perfect helper for warding off negativity. It also cleanses and purifies energy and can add a veil of psychic protection to your home.
• If you suffer from nightmares, draw a protective circle around your bed by sprinkling dried rosemary in a clockwise direction. Placing a sprig under your pillow is said to help you sleep better.
• Burning rosemary emits cleansing and purifying energy – use it to rid your life of negativity.
• If you’re looking to enhance your memory, carrying a piece of rosemary in your purse is thought to help.
You can buy fully grown potted herbs and spices at many supermarkets and garden centres. If you do, cleanse your plant by imagining white light flowing through its stems.
