White Witch Patricia Weston shows you how to call upon the goddess and set up a goddess altar to honour them
Witchcraft is all about magically connecting with the god and goddess. Goddess magic can bring an amazingly powerful energy from within, assisting you to tap into your inner goddess energy. When you connect to your goddess, you also unleash your own inner power. Witches believe in the male and female energies of universal being or divine energy – hence the worship of the god and goddess. When I came to explore my spiritual path, I connected with some gods and goddesses and not others. For me, the connection was a deeply personal one. I associated with the deities that I felt a very strong alliance with.
The goddesses I honour and connect with align with my spiritual and healing needs. I work with the Egyptian deities Isis, Hathor and Nephthys, and the goddess of the crossroads, Hekate (Hecate). I also love the feisty energy of The Morrighan. These amazing deities cut across different pantheons of beliefs, and have come into my life at times when I have needed them most. Isis and Hathor have healing and maternal attributes, and help with my healing work, while Hekate has been there for me in my darkest hour. The Morrighan never fails to inspire me with plenty of grit and feisty energy whenever I need to battle through a tough patch in my life! Here are some others you may want to connect with…
Isis is the maternal goddess of healing and magic. She can assist the witch in her magical workings. She embodies a caring and compassionate energy, and is the Divine Mother who is there for us whenever we need a loving embrace. Regarded as the Patron of Mothers, she will take extra care of young children and those in the caring profession.
Nephthys is also known as the hidden one – she can assist you in times when you need to become invisible as a form of protection. She can also help you in times of stress, as she embodies an energy of peace and tranquillity.
Hathor is the Egyptian goddess of beauty and strength. She can assist you to look your best and also help you tap into your inner strength. She is very helpful to the modern businesswoman who needs to be very efficient, organised and well-groomed!
Hekate is the goddess of the Dark Moon. She governs the crossroads and can help you when you are between paths in your life. She can also assist those going through dark and difficult times, as she lights the way.
The Morrighan is the goddess of the battlefield. She can shapeshift into a raven. If you are drawn to the corvids, this goddess may be the one for you. She is strong, feisty and fiery and will assist you whenever you feel the need to go into battle.
To find out which goddess you connect to, look through a list of goddesses. Take a deep breath, clear your mind and trust your intuition to find your connection. As you go through the list, you may find you are particularly drawn to one or two powerful figures. You can then begin to build a strong connection with this deity by finding a statue of them or printing off a picture and setting up an altar in honour of them to build a deeper, stronger bond.
Now try this: Set up your own goddess altar!
• Clear a clean space in your home, preferably facing north (the seat of most power).
• Place your goddess statue or picture in a prominent position and then place the objects she is associated with around her. For example, if you were setting up an altar to the beautiful sea goddess Yemaya, you would use a light blue candle like the colour of the sea and adorn her altar with seashells, sand, sea glass, driftwood and a chalice filled with seawater or salted water.
• Sit at your altar regularly to connect with your goddess in quiet meditation and embellish her with gifts that she likes to thank her for assisting you.
