Learn about the well-loved Lenormand card system with White Witch Patricia Weston
My very first encounter with Lenormand cards came in the form of cigarette cards early last year. During the 1920s, it was common practice to place a card inside a pack of cigarettes in the UK and Ireland. This was initially to reinforce the paper thin cigarette packs. Cards were collected and came in different varieties including cards with pictures of movie stars, the Royal family, trains, flowers, and most importantly for me, fortune telling cards – also known as Lenormand cards.
One day, my eye was drawn to a beautiful small deck of cards called Carrera’s cigarette cards. These consisted of 36 fortune telling cards with beautiful red decorative backs. I immediately felt tingles all over my body and a faint but familiar voice in my ear saying ‘buy them.’ I also smelled a whiff of cigarette smoke too, and felt this was my grandfather coming through from the spirit world encouraging me to get these cards to read with. I duly obliged and eagerly awaited the postman’s delivery.
I had never read with this fortune telling system before because my main tool for divination was the tarot cards, but as I glanced through the magical images on these beautiful little cards, I was instantly smitten.
After some research online, I discovered that each card came free in a pack of Black Cat cigarettes around 1926 − my grandfather smoked a similar brand in his day called Craven A, which were made by the same company. I loved the simple synchronicity and set about learning the Lenormand system of card reading.
Coco Chanel was a fan of the Lenormand cards, and famously kept a deck on her coffee table ready to consult whenever she had a decision to make. The Lenormand card system was during the Napoleonic era.
I consult my cards every day now for both myself and my clients. I love the direct, precise and accurate nature of this beautiful system − the Lenormand tells you the truth, so they are not for the faint-hearted. They get straight to the point and reveal the plain, unvarnished truth of a situation. I draw three cards each morning to see what energy I need to be aware of for the day.
I often frequently find myself consulting the cards on other mundane but important matters, such as where my son has hidden his shoes in the busy mornings when I’m trying to get him to school – a quick three-card spread usually points me in the right direction. When the electricity in my home was tripping one Sunday afternoon and my husband couldn’t find the cause, I consulted my Lenormand. The fox card came up along with the lily card. The lily card gave me the feeling it was something white, so I thought an appliance, and the fox made me think it was something hidden in an enclosed space with chicken, as the fox is holding a chicken in his mouth on the card. Bizarrely enough, it turned out to be our fridge causing the electricity to trip. We quickly unplugged the fridge, pulled it out of its cubbyhole only to discover it was badly burnt out at the back and could have caused a fire. So, I do believe the cards saved us a hefty electricity repair bill and most importantly saved our lives that day.
