If you have been waiting for a sign to get started on the journey towards the life you really want then, THIS IS IT! Over the next 7 days you have the chance to consider, create and take action towards your dreams, by following Camilla Sacre-Dallerup’s tips…
1 Dream big
Having a dream, an idea or a goal is where it all begins. Think about this as the seed, by having the thought you have already started planting this seed, which one day will turn in to a beautiful flower just like your dream, it will flourish and come to realisation with some nurturing. I call this planting your seed, your idea, in the garden of opportunity.
But like any beautiful flower, it will not happen immediately or without ‘watering’. I find that when I decide to fully commit to a goal, whether it’s personal- or career-based, writing it down and speaking about it as if I am actually already doing it cements my vision.
To give you an example, years before my first self-help book was published, when I was asked what I was doing, I started telling everyone that I was writing my first book. The truth was that I was writing it, but I had no idea that I would get it published at the time. Somehow, though, every time I mentioned i, it became more and more real. It was like every time I said it out loud, I affirmed that it would happen.
So whatever you want to create in your life, a new job, a more balanced life or a personal quality, start by writing it down and then speak about it as if it’s definitely going to happen.
2 Take action
Now this is vital! I have heard people saying,’ I visualised it and then waited for it to happen but it never did’. Ok, let’s just clarify this. To make something happen, we have got to start by taking action towards it.
When we think about what it is that we want, it can be overwhelming at first, which is why it’s vital, once you have written down your dream, to break it down into smaller steps.
Ask yourself, what’s the one step I can do today, this week or this month which will help me get one step closer to the life I really want? Then go from there.
Make a plan for the week, the month and the year, outlining steps and actions that you can take. Once you have broken down the goal into smaller pieces it always seems so much more achievable, which will help you believe it’s possible.
3 Follow your gut instinct
I truly believe that we have a gut feeling for a reason, deep down we just know if something feels right or not. It’s just that sometimes we choose to ignore that intuition, although every bone in our body is saying do it, we may listen to others saying ‘not sure that’s the right move for you’.
Sometimes when you mention to friends or family what your dreams are, they may be keen to let you know what you should and shouldn’t be doing. At the same time as they may try to convince you that whatever you have planned is never going to happen. I suggest regardless of what everyone else is saying, you must trust in how you feel about it, and remind yourself that you are the only one who knows what’s best for you and your journey. And more than that, what you are capable of.
You are the one, 10 years from now, who is going to either thank yourself for following your instinct or be asking yourself why you didn’t.
4 Have courage
To create the life that we want takes courage. There is a saying that goes, ‘everything you ever wanted is one step outside of your comfort zone’ – I couldn’t agree more.
The first time we do something new even if it is everything we have ever dreamt of, it’s foreign to us and nerves may creep in, it may feel awful at first. So yes be prepared to step right out of that comfort zone and simply ask yourself, what’s the worst thing that can happen?
Once you have considered that, you will realise that that is probably not likely, and not actually that scary after all. I have done so many things in my life way out of my comfort zone, some situations I have literally been looking for the exit, but then followed through and realised they were some of the most amazing things I had ever done in my life and it led me on my way to more things I am passionate about.
These days I like to challenge myself to find the comfort outside the zone over and over again and I urge you to try it too. My motto is, we have the power to choose whether we have courage or not so we might as well choose to have it.
5 Visualise it
Visualisation has been one of the most helpful tools I’ve discovered. I was lucky enough that my coach taught me about the power of visualisation at 13 years old and I have used it ever since. It can be a little difficult at first to imagine all the details you want to, but as they say practice makes perfect.
All you have to do is sit down somewhere quiet and close your eyes. Bring attention to each in and out breath, then start to imagine what it would look like to be living the life you want. Notice as many details as possible; make it colourful and, most of all, connect with the emotions that you are feeling. Is this dream making you feel happy, warm and content?
Take a few minutes in your day to imagine what it will be like when you have achieved it. Doing this reminds you of why it is you want to achieve this in your life. Visualisation is like your virtual dream board which you can carry with you everywhere.
6 Don’t let the negativity of others in
There will probably be doubters who will love to tell you how difficult it will be for you to achieve this – hey, you may even have doubts yourself sometimes. That’s ok, as long as you don’t let them stay around too long. Whenever I used to feel doubt sneak in, in my career, I would switch my thinking and start focusing on what I could be doing to support myself in my journey by writing down 5 action points, rather than the things which would be holding me back like fear and worries. This would immediately switch my thinking from a negative place into a ‘thriving to get there’ place.
Believe in what you dream of 100%. Believe that you are capable of doing amazing things and don’t let anyone tell you it’s not possible.
7 Connect with your passion
If you are passionate about something, this will always shine through. When thinking of what you want to achieve it really helps asking yourself the important question like: ‘am I passionate about this’ and ‘what will it mean to me to achieve this’.
I think we ignite an energy within which is infectious when we allow ourselves to make choices which are connected to our passion. Why wouldn’t you want to make passionate choices for yourself? Making choices for yourself which are connect to your passion may come with some sacrifices but then the choice is, how much do you want to create the life you really want.
And last question I would like to ask you is…..What are you waiting for? Write the answer down. Look at your answer and then consider if it’s time for you to live the life that you want!
