This autumn, throw the ultimate magical get-together that oozes hex appeal…
As the nights grow darker and the moon glows brighter, we can’t help but feel an affinity with this time of year. Here on Soul & Spirit, we believe it’s the perfect chance to come together and collaborate with our witchy sisters in order to share the magic and feel the love. We show you how to throw the ultimate coven party, ensuring your magic is strengthened and enhanced…
1: Call upon your coven
Nothing makes a witch’s power stronger than teaming up and sharing her energies with other empowered women. Modern witchcraft is all about uplifting and embracing each other, so send out some spiritual vibes and ask your sisters to come round and practice our magical must-dos for a stronger sense of magick. As they say, ‘the more, the merrier!’
2: Get your ‘Every witch needs’ checklist ready!
Altar: Every great witch needs a safe space to practise her magic, and this is where the altar comes in. When you invite your witch sisters over, have them bring one thing of spiritual significance along to the party to place on the altar – this should allow your energies to come together to create a stronger and more powerful magic space for the evening.
Candles: Set the scene and fill the air with an array of scents by lighting some candles for when your guests arrive. Just like witches, candles of all shapes and sizes are welcome – the more variety, the better!
Incense: Not only does incense smell great, it has been long believed that burning it before spellcasting helps boost any magical potency, making this an essential at your coven’s party.
Wand: What is a witch without her magic wand? Be sure to have all of your spiritual sisters tap your altar upon entering the party, to ensure they both give and receive energy. If your party falls on a full moon, why not ‘draw down the moon’ before spellcasting – simply stand outside under the luminous glow and point your wand at the moon. This is believed to charge your wand and make your magic even more powerful.
3: Enjoy a soothing and soulful botanical brew!
To help everyone tap into that all-important magickal ‘other side’, one recommended way to get everyone feeling witchy is to gather round and share some tea. A herbal hot brew is a sure-fire way to ignite your passionate streak and unleash any powers hidden deep within. Before your party, head out into Mother Nature and forage for your own herbs and sprigs to dry – just be sure to only take what you need and to thank the earth for the bounty you are receiving. As an alternative, you can use bagged tea.
Once you’ve drunk your potions, it’s time to try your hand at some tasseomancy as you learn the sacred art of tea reading!
Before undergoing any divination, it’s important that your mind is clear and free from any negativity that may cloud it. Drinking your tea should do just that. Ensure everyone at your gathering feels the same, and that your surroundings are calm and open to spiritual energies. To make your reading easier, your tea should be served in a wide, patternless mug to ensure you don’t misinterpret anything the leaves may be telling you. For an extra touch, why not light candles and drape a white cloth over your table?
CONSIDER YOUR QUESTIONS
Think about what in your life you would like answered, or areas in life where you’d like some clarity. Hold your cup in your left hand and swirl it anti-clockwise three times. To drain off the remaining liquid, carefully turn the cup upside down onto the saucer. Keeping it held down, turn it again three times to the left, while continually asking for guidance in your mind. You will intuitively know when it’s time to turn the cup over and when you do, be sure to place it on the saucer with the handle facing towards you.
READ THE LEAVES
There are many formations, symbols and patterns that can form in your mug. For instance, if you see a star formation in your leave, this can mean that fortune and good luck awaits you. A heart shape indicates that love or friendship may form; a sword could mean an argument is brewing, and an arch shape represents a new opportunity on the horizon. Remember, the leaves are open to interpretation and it is what you and your coven sees that matters. Be sure to share the mugs around to get a second reading – you could see something you might not have previously envisioned!
4: Cast some candle magic!
Embrace ember power to fire up your spells!
1 Firstly, begin by choosing the colour of your candle. Silver and blue candles are great for spells that help enhance psychic ability, red for confidence and passion, pink for love and relationships, and purple for protection. White candles are harnessed for purity and black helps ward off unwanted energies.
2 Before utilising candle magic for a spell, you and your coven must cleanse your candles. Do this by wiping with a cloth that has been dipped in moon water. This is to wash away any energies the candle may be harbouring that could interfere with your ritual.
3 With a knife or carving tool, carve your wishes and desires into the candle. For example, if you are wishing for more abundance, carve “To reap more rewards” onto a green candle.
4 Finally, anoint your candle with oil before performing your ritual. Choose an oil that either resonates best with you, or one that helps your desires. For example, if you are wishing for love, dab rose oil up and down it to strengthen its powers.
5 Have all of your witches take their candles, place them upon the altar and light them. Gather around in a circle, holding hands, and one by one, chant your chosen spell out loud. Then when everyone has said their spell, blow out the candles.
5: Harness some moon magic!
Gather your spiritual tribe to perform this spell to draw down a full moon for stronger powers and creativity
You will need: • Seven silver bells attached to a long stick with silver ribbons, about waist height
This ritual is best performed outside under a full moon, or if you cannot be outside, inside with the moon’s light shining into the room will be fine.
1 Hold the bells in your non-dominant hand, and as you’re facing the moon, say softly and rhymically “Mother of the moon, mother of the moon, come to me, be with me, mother of the moon.”
2 Spin on the spot anti-clockwise, continuing the chant and ringing the bells more loudly until you feel dizzy.
3 Steady yourself and turn more slowly, chanting more quietly and ringing the bells more softly until you are motionless and silent.
4 Sit on the ground again, facing the moon, and whisper “I draw down the moon, the moon is within me. I take in with gratitude her creativity.”
5 Whisper what you want most, and then say “I am the moon. May this, my wish, be granted soon.”
6 Embed your bell stick in the ground outdoors. You can either take it in turns to perform your moon rituals, or everyone can have a long stick, where you all perform at the same time – either is just as powerful.

6: Pendulum dowse!
Uncover spiritual guidance, seek truth, balance energies and tap into the spirit realm with the power of pendulums
1 Begin by choosing your crystal. Each shape and type has different properties, so you will need to work out what it is you and your gathering wish to work on and enhance. For example, a chakra stone contains crystals that represent all seven energy centres in the body, and using this can help find an imbalance in your chakras. Quartz crystals act as ‘universal’ stones, meaning they can be harnessed for whatever purpose you desire – such as activating, drawing or storing energy. Spiral-shaped pendulums are wonderful if you wish to answer general life questions.
2 Once you have chosen your crystal, ensure the space you are practising in is quiet, calm and open to the spiritual realm. Envision yourself surrounded by a comforting white ray of light. Take the chain it hangs from and hold it between your forefinger and thumb.
3 When you and your witches are relaxed and feel receptive, you’re now ready to start asking questions. In order to establish how your pendulum answers you, start by asking questions that can be answered with a ‘yes’, such as ‘is the sun shining outside?’ or ‘is it Monday?’. You should start to notice that your pendulum swings in certain ways when it means ‘yes’. Movements to look out for include side-to-side swaying, diagonal swinging or rotations that are either clockwise or anticlockwise. Once you have established what ‘yes’ means, repeat the above to find out what ‘no’ means.
4 Now you have worked out yes and no, it’s time to start asking your pendulum some of life’s questions. You can take it in turns to go around the circle and allow everyone to ask a question as you uncover what it is you wished to find out.
