Make friends with fey folk and they’ll bring a dusting of enchantment into your life. We start with dryads, also known as tree spirits…
Faeries are not just colourful characters from Disney films or imaginary entities from your childhood; these mysterious spiritual creatures are a part of nature, and calling on their mystical presence can help to bring healing powers into your life.
The first thing to understand when trying to connect with the fey is that they’re not visible to everyone – if you’re disrespectful to Mother Earth or animals, they will sense this and hide away. Always make sure that when you’re working with them you make as few disturbances as possible – picking flowers or dropping litter are big no-nos in the faery world. They also prefer it when your energy is open and calm, so take a few deep breaths to relax your mind and body before calling on their guidance.
As there are so many different types of elementals, all with their own quirks and attributes, knowing who to work with and when can be a tricky, especially if you’ve never tried before. So we’ve asked faery expert Lucy Cavendish (who has had magical visitations since her childhood) to explain how to make contact with five very different beings, and exactly how they can enchant your spiritual path.
Tree Spirits: Dryads
These grounding beings dwell in nature and often look like a hybrid of a human and a tree; you may see one as the outline of a woman’s body in a branch or a face peering out from a trunk, and several of them can inhabit one tree at the same time. As it is with all spirits, you’re more likely to see a dryad when you feel peaceful and centred.
The best time to connect with them is when the seasons start to change. So, make a visit to your favourite tree in spring when its sap begins to run, or in autumn when the leaves start to change colour and fall.
Generally, dryads ease the karmic residue, often held in our bodies as energetic blocks. Each tree has a particular energy; oak dryads will strengthen you in times of stress and challenge, while willow spirits will allow your emotions to flow and can release negative thought patterns.
